Dear Friends----
Welcome to National Sensory Awareness Month!
As you probably know, it is always LifeSkills’ goal to raise awareness about Sensory Processing Disorders and to help children, teens, adults, and their families impacted by this condition that affects more people than ADHD or Autism, but is much less known.
The symptoms of SPD indicate a body, which is too high/overloaded or too low/in need of more stimulation---OR BOTH!!
A CUP WILL HELP US TO UNDERSTAND OVER-LOAD OR UNDER-STIMULATION:
WHEN TOO FULL, CANNOT TAKE MORE:
-will decrease eye contact
-will run away
-will cover ears
-will tune you out
WHEN “JUST RIGHT” - FUNCTIONS WELL!
-is flexible
-stays focused
-participates well
-is happy and calm
WHEN TOO LOW, NEEDS & SEEKS MORE:
-spins, never stops, is hyperactive
-slumps, slouches
-break toys
-hugs too hard
To honor Sensory Awareness Month, each day in October, we will have a tip for “calming down” or “calming up”. I will highlight a specific symptom----and suggest a way (that is socially acceptable!) to handle it............Check here, daily for the whole month.
Here’s to a month of making a difference for the people we love the most!
My best, always-----
